It took me a while (and a lot of re-parenting bones and sub-skeletons), but here they are! This is a collection of every single 3D model that was created specifically to be used in Death by Degrees' cinematic real-time cut-scenes. These are generally more detailed, higher poly versions of the in-game models used exclusively for some of the cinematic interludes that are neither pre-rendered nor in-game.

Nina Williams PHICEN figure preorders ending May 5th
Just a short reminder: Preorders for PHICEN's 1:6 scale Nina Williams collectible figure are ending May 5th. More on this stunning piece later (/pieces actually, as the figure comes with a plethora of accessories), in my interview with Chad, the man behind SMcG Customs, who has worked with PHICEN on several pop culture femme fatale beauties before, and basically is the reason this figure exists. You can preorder NINA VER. 1.0 through one of your local places or, as I did, directly through SMcG's official site smcgcustoms.com

Death by Degrees environmental concept artwork
Death by Degrees'
beautiful environmental artwork. Stunning how very close to the concept
art most all of the sceneries in the game turned out to be. The level
design in Death by Degrees is one of the things I love most about the
game - Divided into 3 main environmental sections, you start out on a
luxury cruise ship and, after being taken hostage and exploring a huge
island based penitentiary, you return back to the ship and reveal its
deeper secrets in the final chapter of the game. The concept art, which
can be unlocked in the game, includes design sketches of the ship's art
déco, Japanese and imperial interiors, the roman ruins inspired swimming
pool and several orlop deck facilities and laboratories. Take a look at the
actual images unlockable in the game, extracted from the PlayStation 2
DVD, after the jump (and try to spot the little Nina sketches that are hidden in some of them)...

WIP 002 - Extracting Death by Degrees' Nina Williams
WORK.IN.PROGRESS My
initial project - crafting my own Nina Williams character model - has
just come to a halt. Having finished work on the face and hair meshes,
and their respective textures (I previewed a WIP of the face texture in
my last post) I was looking for a way to take a few good shots of Nina's
character model in Death by Degrees, for reference purposes. Not
minding the time and digging deeper and deeper it just so happened that I
found there's a way to extract whole models and sceneries directly from
the PlayStation 2 DVD...

Shirogumi CG wizardry for Death by Degrees - Nina Williams
In an effort to highlight the beauty of Shirogumi's masterful CG wizardry I put some of my direct-feed screen captures of Death by Degrees' stunning FMV cinematics through a very extensive (and in 2 cases several-hours-long) 'Photoshop remastering process'. Now that sounds pretentious doesn't it :-D Check out the results and a little history lesson on Shirogumi Inc. after the jump...

Roberto Ferrari for Tekken's Nina Williams in Death by Degrees
Hiring Italian-born artist Roberto Ferrari to do the character design for Death by Degrees was without a doubt an extremely wise decision on Namco’s part. Ferrari, who had previously worked at famous Japanese animation studio Tatsunoko Production, was to provide character designs with that sort of authentic western look Namco was looking for. As Death by Degrees Producer Yozo Sakagami explained, the team at Namco thought a Japanese artist might struggle emulating said look, and worried about Japanese features sneaking their way into the design of the game's female Irish lead.
What Ferrari ultimately brought to the table wasn’t only beautifully hand-drawn drafts of an interesting cast of characters, but also extremely sophisticated and borderline-ingenious costume designs for the famous female assassin in the title role.
Roberto Ferrari moved from Rome to Tokyo in the Mid-90s to fulfil his dream of working as a character design artist in Japan. He was part of the design team at Tatsunoko Production of Gatchaman fame and worked on titles for some of the video game industry's leading companies, including Namco Bandai Games Inc. and Square Enix, such as The Last Remnant, Moon Diver, Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes - Encore and Death by Degrees.
